Can Babies Sleep On Their Tummy? Understanding Baby Sleep Safety & Tips

Carmel Morabito, Melbournes Leading Baby Sleep Consultant

As a new parent, you’re probably facing endless questions about your baby’s sleep: Is my baby sleeping enough? Am I following the best practices for baby sleep safety? One of the most common concerns parents have is whether or not it’s safe for their baby to sleep on their tummy. While it may seem like tummy sleeping is natural for your little one, it’s important to understand the risks and alternatives.

As a baby sleep consultant with 30+ years of experience helping parents navigate these challenges, I’m here to share expert insights into baby sleep safety, as well as tips on how you can help your baby sleep soundly and safely. And for more personalized advice, be sure to check out my downloadable sleep guides, including my latest guide on thriving through the 4-month sleep regression.

Why Tummy Sleeping is Not Recommended for Babies

When it comes to baby sleep, safety is the top priority. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other child health experts have long recommended that babies sleep on their backs—not their tummies. This practice helps reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which is tragically linked to tummy sleeping.

The reason tummy sleeping is considered unsafe for babies is that it increases the risk of suffocation and overheating, especially in the early months of life when babies are unable to roll over or adjust their position. Babies’ airways are still developing, and when they sleep face down, they may accidentally breathe in carbon dioxide from the mattress or their own bodies, which can be dangerous.

As a parent, it’s natural to worry, but understanding these risks and following expert recommendations will ensure your baby is as safe as possible during sleep.

When Is It Safe for Babies to Sleep on Their Tummy?

It is safe to swaddle your baby until they can roll back to front. This is usually between the ages of 4 to 6 months.

Once your baby can roll back to front, generally babies have the muscle strength and coordination needed to turn over on their own safely. It is at this point it’s more about personal preference of your child but always prioritize safely practices. Remember it always place your baby down on their back and let them roll into a comfortable position.

Safe Sleep Alternatives and Tips for Better Baby Sleep

There are plenty of safe sleep practices that can help your baby sleep soundly without putting them at risk. As a baby sleep consultant, I recommend the following tips:

  1. Back Sleeping is Best: Always lay your baby down on their back for sleep, both at night and for naps. This reduces the risk of SIDS and ensures your baby’s airway is open and unobstructed.
  2. Create a Safe Sleep Environment: Keep your baby’s sleep space free from soft bedding, pillows, stuffed animals, or bumper pads. A firm mattress with a fitted sheet is all they need. A clutter-free crib ensures your baby isn’t at risk of suffocation during sleep.
  3. Swaddle for Comfort and Security: If your baby is younger than 3 months and hasn’t started rolling over, swaddling can provide a sense of comfort and security that mimics the snugness of the womb. This can also help your baby sleep longer and more peacefully. I highly recommend using a swaddle designed for safety, like my Calm Swaddle (view here), to ensure your baby is both cozy and secure.
  4. Consider Room Sharing: The Red nose guidelines, recommend room sharing between the ages of newborn to 12 months. This can reduce the risk of SIDS and make nighttime feedings easier.
  5. Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine: Having a predictable sleep schedule can help your baby understand when it’s time to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. A consistent routine will also make it easier for you as a parent to manage sleep challenges.

The 4-Month Sleep Regression: How It Affects Baby Sleep and How You Can Help

At around 4 months, many parents notice their baby’s sleep patterns change. Your little one may start waking up more frequently at night, and it can feel like their once peaceful sleep is suddenly interrupted. This is known as the 4-month sleep regression, and it’s a completely normal (but often challenging) phase of development.

During this time, babies experience changes in their sleep cycles, and many start to fight sleep or wake up frequently. But don’t worry—there are ways to manage this transition and help your baby get the rest they need.

I’ve created a comprehensive guide on how to handle the 4-month sleep regression, which includes sleep training tips and strategies to create a soothing bedtime routine. You can download my guide here and get the expert tips you need to navigate this tricky stage with confidence.
